Un test d’ADN reliant des familles Long

Il y a environ 15 années, le résultat du test d’ADN de Gilles Long publié sur Ancestry nous montrait que les descendants de Philip Long étaient de proches parents de deux familles de la Pennsylvanie, celle de Darl Long & celle de Jeffrey L. Waite. Ces familles, comme la nôtre, cherchent désespérément leurs ancêtres qui ont vécu avant 1800.

Les efforts faits auprès de Darl n’ont pas donné les résultats escomptés. Cependant, mes travaux ont permis d’apporter des éclaircissements pour ses ancêtres nés de 1800 à 1900.

Quant à Jeffrey L. Waite, il ne semblait avoir aucune foi dans ces résultats et était très avare de commentaires à ce sujet. Comment un dénommé Waite de Pennsylvanie pouvait-il être de la parenté d’une famille Long du Canada? 

Jeffrey nous a dit à cette époque que sa famille était consciente que l’une de ses ancêtres mariée à un dénommé Waite au cours de la Guerre de Sécession 1861-1865 avait eu une relation extra maritale, ce qui pouvait expliquer qu'il soit du même groupe haplo que le nôtre.

En 2017, j’ai repris contact avec lui et il a accepté que je cherche à résoudre ce dilemme qui avait cours dans sa famille depuis 1860. Il a aussi compris que si ce travail n’apporterait pas une réponse claire, il disposerait d’une grande documentation à propos de sa famille et que le tout pourrait lui être utile éventuellement. Ma recherche a duré trois mois, à sept jours par semaine. J’ai amassé des centaines de dossiers de toutes sortes. Régulièrement, je lui faisais parvenir un résumé de mes travaux. Vous avez compris que, en cherchant les ancêtres de Jeffrey L. Waite, je cherchais les miens.

Ceux qui affirmaient que tout ce travail était inutile, et qui le croient toujours, se sont carrément trompés. Je viens tout juste de découvrir une autre raison qui ajoute de la véracité à mon affirmation. J’ai maintenant l’information qui permet de résoudre le dilemme Long-Waite.

Je dois aussi vous expliquer pourquoi je travaille en fonction d’une hypothèse et que je publie le résultat de mon travail en cours de route. D’abord, lorsque l’hypothèse formulée n’est pas vérifiée comme on le souhaite, ça ne signifie nullement que je n’ai rien trouvé. Ça signifie plutôt qu’une piste de moins reste à explorer. Ensuite, une recherche en généalogie passe par la recherche de documents, ce qui me semble plus efficace que de jongler avec des histoires inventées de toutes pièces sans avancer un seul document pour appuyer ces histoires.

Dernièrement, j'ai revu mon travail exécuté en 2017 afin de le rendre public. À la lumière de quelques autres documents, je l'ai amélioré. Néanmoins, ma conclusion reste la même. Je suis convaincu d'avoir identifié l'individu nommé Long qui est le père biologique de Dennis Waite né en 1861 en Pennsylvanie, la mère étant Lavinia (Lovina) Heyman. Le père biologique n'est pas William Waite (Weight, Wecht) comme on le croyait,

Où habitait Laviana Heyman en 1860?

Lavinia Heyman, fille de Richard & Mary Ann, est née en 1841 en Pennsylvanie (PA). Elle figure pour la première fois dans le recensement de 1850 fait à Asylum, Bradford, PA. Elle est alors âgée de 9 ans. 

En 1860, selon le recensement de sa famille, elle n’habite plus chez ses parents maintenant établis à Morris, Clearfield, PA. En 1860, Lavinia a donc 19 ans. Je crois qu'elle habitait chez Charles Heyman à Londonderry, Bedford en PA. Le recensement indique qu'elle était à l'emploi de cette famille.

Où habitait Laviana Heyman en 1870

En 1870, les parents de Lavinia vivent à Decatur, Clearfield, PA. Quant à Lavinia, elle habite avec Joseph Johnson avec qui elle a eu deux enfants : Clark (4 ans) & Robert (3 ans). Son frère, Jonathan Heyman y habite aussi. Le recensement montre aussi la présence de Dennis Weight, âgé de quatre (4) ans, qui est l’ancêtre 'officiel' de Jeffrey L. Waite. En fait, Dennis est à coup sûr l’enfant de Laviana Heyman et d’un partenaire Long. Qui est ce partenaire Long?

Il s'agirait de Thomas Long qui est né en 1828 en PA et qui était le fils d'Isaac Long et Catherine Wolfe. J'en étais certain en 2017. Depuis, nous avons d'autres preuves pour appuyer mon affirmation. Entre autres, un individu de la PA a rejoint notre groupehaplo, soit Kenneth Long dont l'ancêtre est Thomas Long. J'ai décidé aussi d'ajouter d'autres documents qui serviront à des gérant.e.s d'arbre de famille sur Ancestry qui ne savent rien des résultats d'ADN de notre groupehaplo.

Où était Thomas Long en 1860?

Pour démontrer la vraie paternité de Dennis Waite, on doit à tout le moins démontrer qu'il a eu une opportunité de rencontrer Laviana Heyman, la mère de Dennis. Thomas était partenaire avec son frère Samuel dans l'industrie du spectacle, ce qui les a amenés à divers endroits aux États-Unis. Vers 1861, ils ont mis fin à ce partenariat. Samuel n'est pas revenu à Morris, Clearfield comme Thomas. Ce dernier s'est enregistré comme soldat volontaire le 1er septembre 1861: dans un autre document que je crois plus fiable, il s'agirait plutôt de 1862. On peut donc supposer que Thomas y habitait depuis quelque temps. Au décès de Dennis, alors qu'il avait 75 ans, on a indiqué sur le certificat qu'il était né le 31 mars 1861, donc engendré en juillet 1860. Je n'ai pas de document indiquant où se trouvait Thomas en 1860: j'assume qu'il était présent dans les environs. Il y a un autre document militaire indiquant la date d'un second enregistrement (1863) de Thomas pour retourner au front.

La date de naissance de Dennis me semble exacte, car Laviana a indiqué en 1870 que Dennis avait 8 ans. En général, lors d'un recensement, on indique l'âge au dernier anniversaire. Dennis pouvait avoir huit (8) ans.

Où était Thomas Long en 1870?

Il vivait à Morris avec son épouse et son fils Ardell âgé de quatre (4) ans.

En 1870, Laviana Heyman habitait elle aussi à Morris, mais elle vivait avec Joseph Johnson avec qui elle avait eu deux enfants, quatre (4) ans et trois (3) ans.. D’après le recensement, les deux habitaient dans le même voisinage.

Des résultats étonnants au test d'ADN

Les résultats au test d'ADN (37 marqueurs) montrent que la différence entre le dossier de Jeffrey L. Waite & celui de Kenneth Long (Isaac Long) est de deux marqueurs. D'après le tableau d'Ancestry (Tableau 2), l'ancêtre commun le plus récent (ACPR) a vécu environ de 8 à 12 générations plus tôt, soit deux ou trois siècles. D'autres tables de probabilité présentent des résultats similaires. Les variations dans le chromosome Y arrivent au hasard et prennent parfois des siècles avant de se produire dans une lignée paternelle.

DNA Test Linking Long Families About 15 years ago

The results of Gilles Long's Y-DNA test published on Ancestry showed us that Philip Long's descendants are close relatives of two Pennsylvania families, Darl Long's & Jeffrey L. Waite's. These families, like ours, are desperately searching for their ancestors who lived before 1800.

The efforts made with Darl have not been successful. However, my work has shed some light on his ancestors born between 1800 and 1900.

As for Jeffrey L. Waite, he seemed to have no faith in these results and was very stingy in his comments. How could a man named Waite from Pennsylvania be related to a Long family from Canada? Jeffrey told us at the time that his family was aware that one of his ancestors married to a Waite during the American Civil War 1861-1865 had an extramarital relationship, which could explain why he was of the same haplogroup as ours.

In 2017, I reconnected with him and he agreed that I would try to resolve this dilemma that had been going on in his family since 1860. He also understood that if this work did not provide a clear answer, he would have a great deal of documentation about his family and that it might be useful to him in the future. My research lasted three months, seven days a week. I collected hundreds of files of all kinds. Regularly, I would send him a summary of my work. As you can see, when I was looking for Jeffrey''s ancestors, I was by the same token looking for my own.

Those who said that all this work was useless, and who still believe it, were totally mistaken. I have just discovered another reason that adds truth to my assertion. I now have the information to solve the Long-Waite dilemma. I also need to explain why I am working on a hypothesis and that I am publishing the results of my work along the way. First of all, when the hypothesis formulated is not verified as one wishes, it does not mean that I have not found anything. Rather, it means that one less lead remains to be explored. Secondly, genealogical research involves searching for documents, which seems to me to be more efficient than juggling with stories invented from scratch without putting forward a single document to support these stories.

Recently, I reviewed my work done in 2017 in order to make it public. In light of a few other documents, I have improved it. Nevertheless, my conclusion remains the same. I am convinced that I have identified the individual named Long who is the biological father of Dennis Waite born in 1861 in Pennsylvania, the mother being Lavinia (Lovina) Heyman. The biological father is not William Waite (Weight, Wecht) as we thought.

Where did Laviana Heyman live in 1860? 

Lavinia Heyman, daughter of Richard & Mary Ann, was born in 1841 in Pennsylvania, PA. She first appeared in the 1850 census taken in Asylum, Bradford, PA. She was 9 years old at the time. In 1860, according to her family's census, she no longer lived with her parents, who now lived in Morris, Clearfield, PA. In 1860, Lavinia was 19 years old. I believe she was living with Charles Heyman in Londonderry, Bedford, PA. The census indicates that she was employed by that family.

Where did Laviana Heyman live in 1870? 

In 1870, Lavinia's parents lived in Decatur, Clearfield, PA. Lavinia lived with Joseph Johnson, with whom she had two children: Clark (4 years old) & Robert (3 years old). Her brother, Jonathan Heyman also lives there. The census also shows the presence of Dennis Weight, age four (4), who is the 'official' ancestor of Jeffrey L. Waite. In fact, Dennis is definitely the child of Laviana Heyman and a Long partner, not a Waite. Who is this Long partner?

He would be Thomas Long who was born in 1828 in PA and the son of Isaac Long and Catherine Wolfe. I was certain of this in 2017. Since then, we have more evidence to support my claim. Among others, an individual from PA has joined our haplogroup, Kenneth Long, whose ancestor is Thomas Long. I have also decided to add more material for use by family tree managers on Ancestry who are unaware of the Y-DNA results involving Jeffrey and Kenneth's families.

Where was Thomas Long in 1860? 

To prove Dennis Waite's true paternity, we must at least prove that Thomas Long had an opportunity to meet Laviana Heyman, Dennis's mother. Thomas was a partner with his brother Samuel in the entertainment industry, which took them to various places in the United States. Around 1861, they ended this partnership. Samuel did not return to Morris, Clearfield as Thomas did. The latter registered as a volunteer soldier on September 1, 1861. In another document that I believe to be more reliable, it would be 1862. We can therefore assume that Thomas had been living in Morris for some time. When Dennis died at the age of 75, the certificate stated that he was born on March 31, 1861, consequently, he was conceived around July 1860. I have no record of Thomas' whereabouts in 1860; I assume he was in the vicinity. There is another military document indicating the date of a second registration (1863) of Thomas returning to the front.

Dennis' date of birth seems to be correct, as Laviana indicated in 1870 that Dennis was 8 years old. Usually, in a census, the age is indicated as the age at the last birthday. Dennis could have been eight (8) years old.

Where was Thomas Log in 1870? 

He was living in Morris with his wife and four (4) year old son Ardell.

Thomas Long lived in Morris, Clearfield, PA. He was born in 1828. We also know that on the same date Laviana Heyman lived in Morris and that she lived with Joseph Johnson. According to the census, the two lived in the same neighborhood.

Surprising Y-DNA test results

The Y-DNA test results (37 markers) show that the difference between the records of Jeffrey L. Waite & Kenneth Long ( is two (2) markers (Table 1). According to Ancestry (Table 2), the most recent common ancestor (MCRA) lived within about 8 to 12 generations earlier, two to three centuries back. Different probability tables give similar results. Variations in the Y-chromosome are random and sometimes take centuries to occur in a paternal lineage.
